It's Homecoming!

Posted: 14 October 2009

Greetings Fellow Badgers!!

UW vs OSU

What a disappointing loss! The Badgers were able to move the ball surprisingly well against the Buckeyes last Saturday, racking up 368 total yards against a team that was ranked No. 9 nationally in total defense (compared to OSU’s total yardage of 184 yards). But the yardage did not result in touchdowns and the Buckeyes managed to score without their offense on the field, with two interceptions for touchdowns and another touchdown on a 96-yard kick return. OSU’s only impressive offensive drive came at the end of the first half and resulted in another touchdown. So, despite the statistics, the Badgers came out on the losing end.

One bright spot of the day was the Badgers’ ability to pull off a fake field goal, turning it into a touchdown instead. Kudos also go out to O’Brien Schofield who had 3.5 tackles for loss (TFLs) and 2 sacks against the Buckeyes. O’Brien leads the country in TFLs, with no one else having more than 12, and is tied for sixth in sacks.

UW vs Iowa – It’s Homecoming!
This Saturday the Badgers celebrate Homecoming by taking on the Iowa Hawkeyes for the Heartland Trophy. Iowa is coming into the game with a 6-0 record and are ranked 11th and 12th in the AP and USA Today/Coaches polls, respectively. With the loss against OSU, the Badgers have fallen to 30th in both polls. The game starts at noon and will be shown on ESPN. Plan on joining us at Rookies in Cromwell to watch the game.

The Hawkeyes own the nation's second-longest win streak (10) and are tied for second nationally in takeaways (19; Wisconsin isn’t far behind with 16). Early this week, the Hawkeyes were favored by 1 point, indicating how tight this game might be.

On the Badgers’ side, Zach Brown may not play this week after suffering a concussion against OSU. Freshman Montee Ball backed up Clay last week, with 3 carriers for 19 yards and two pass receptions for 22 yards.

Going Bowling
The Big Ten Conference unveiled its new postseason lineup for the 2010-13 college football seasons, with one Big Ten bowl game set to be featured annually on New Year’s Eve and five to be held on New Year’s Day.  Four-year bowl extensions were negotiated with the Capital One, Outback and Insight bowls and new four-year bowl agreements were established with the Gator (Jacksonville), Texas (Houston) and Dallas Football Classic bowls. The Big Ten is already in the midst of an eight-year extension with the Rose Bowl through the 2013 season. So keep New Years Day open over the next few years, because the Badgers could be bowling!

Badgers in the NFL
Owen Daniels is doing well in Houston, with 25 catches for 296 yards and two touchdowns. Among tight ends, Daniels ranks in the top-10 in nearly every category, including: receptions, receiving yards, receiving yards per game, longest catch, touchdowns, plays of 20 or more yards, plays of 40 or more yards and first downs gained.

Closer to home, New York Giants rookie tight end Travis Beckum caught two passes this past weekend for 12 yards in a 44-7 win over Oakland.  Beckum now has five catches for 35 yards on the season and has played in all five games for the Giants. Fellow rookie Matt Shaughnessy, who was teammates with Beckum for four seasons with the Badgers, was on the opposite end of that 44-7 score. He played in his fifth game of the season for Oakland and made the first tackle of his career.

UW Basketball News
The start of the basketball season is still a number of weeks away, but there’s news out there on Marcus Landry and his attempt to earn a spot on the New York Knicks. For a good read, go to: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/2009/10/09/2009-10-09_rookie_marcus_landry_pushes_to_earn_spot_on_new_york_knicks_roster.html
