Gut-wrenching! Posted: 5 November 2008 | Greetings Fellow Badgers! Gut-wrenching! That's how my husband described the Badger's last minute loss to the Spartans on Saturday. And he's not even a football fan!
After leading the entire game, with Hill and Clay each tallying up over 100 yards, and our defense holding the best runningback in the country to a mere 54 yards, the Badgers managed to lose another game. But the head coach definitely contributed in a major way to this loss. After the Badgers took a 24-13 lead with just over 9 minutes left, they were penalized 5 yards on the subsequent kickoff because Jay Valai bumped into an official while the defense was coming onto the field. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, when Bielema learned of the penalty, he went over and talked to the official who made the call. "He said he was being interfered with his ability to do the job," Bielema said. "I told him in my opinion, he wasn't really doing a good job." That ill-advised comment cost the Badgers 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct and started a drive that gave the Spartans a critical touchdown. Also contributing to the Badger loss were 12 penalties for 121 yards, both season-high totals. In the fourth quarter alone, UW drew eight penalties - three on offense, three on defense, one on special teams and one on Bielema - for 66 yards. And I won't even mention the bad clock management. Apparently the time out on the winning field goal was due to the Badgers having only 10 players on the field, another problem that's been plaguing them the whole season. But they're the Badgers and we still love 'em?. This week they take on the Indiana Hoosiers. If you want to see this one, you may have to join us at Rookies in Cromwell, because this one will be shown on the Big Ten Network starting at noon. The Hoosiers are coming off their own tough loss, a 37-34 loss to Central Michigan. Like the Badgers, the Hoosiers have five losses in Big Ten play with their only win coming against Northwestern. And if you want to get in the mood for the game, try to remember those days many years ago when the fans made their own entertainment, if the football team couldn't be relied upon to provide it. For a nice trip back to a Camp Randall game day from last year, check out: http://sports.espn.go.com/travel/news/story?id=3673162. Many of you might not be interested in reading about Brett Bielema right now, but if you're the slightest bit curious, you might want to check out his profile at Sporting News: http://today.sportingnews.com/sportingnewstoday/20081023/?pg=3&pm=1&u1=friend&sub_id=tinylVIqHHFu. It certainly provides a side of him that you never knew. His superstitions and worst habit caused me to laugh, as I'm a bit superstitious myself. It's been a long week (I've been traveling a lot this year, making these write-ups a little more difficult to complete), so that's it for now. Hope to see you at Rookies on Saturday! Edit |
