Badger football season is upon us!

Posted: 29 September 2008

Greetings Fellow Badgers!

First of all, I want to say a big Thank You to David Schaefer for hosting the Big Badger Sendoff on August 21st.  The event was held to say congratulations and good luck to students from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts who are entering the University of Wisconsin this week.  We had a great turnout, with lots of new faces, and that ever-present Badger spirit!  Based on the students that attended, Connecticut will be well represented in Madison this fall.  For those of you who are curious, there are about 25 new students from CT and Western MA entering the UW this fall.

It may not quite feel like it just yet, but Badger football season is upon us!  This Saturday, the Badgers take on the Akron Zips at home in Camp Randall!  The game will be broadcast at noon on the Big Ten Network.  Those of you lucky enough to have Comcast may now be able to watch the Big Ten Network, so check your schedules.  The Badgers enter the year ranked No. 12 in the USA Today poll and No. 13 in the Associated Press poll, both of which were released earlier this month.  The last I heard, the Badgers were picked to win by 26.

The Badgers will be led this season by fifth-year senior Allan Evridge, a transfer from Kansas State.  Evridge beat out Dustin Sherer for the starting spot.  Also starting are Connecticut natives Matt Shaughnessy (right end) and John Moffit, who moves to center this year.  Placekicker Matt Fisher (Appleton, WI) is the nephew of one of our Connecticut alumni, so we wish him well this year, too.  Injured players not expected to start include Chris Pressley at fullback, Aaron Henry at left cornerback, and linebacker Jonathan Casillas.

Head coach Bret Bielema starts the season with an overall 21-5 record at the helm at UW.  Only two other men in Big Ten history ? Michigan's Fielding Yost (22) and Ohio State's Jim Tressel (21) ? have guided their teams to as many as 21 wins in their first two seasons as Big Ten head coaches.

Due to complications with it being a holiday weekend, the regulars won't be making the trek to Rookies in Cromwell for this weekend's game.  However, Rookies is always very accommodating and will treat you well if you happen to show up.  If you don't see the game on a TV, just ask.  I expect that we'll be back to our normal game-watching habits for the second game of the season.

If you haven't visited this site in a while, please scroll down and take a look at some of the Badger sports news that was posted over the summer.

On Wisconsin!
